How to Write in Cursive: Step-by-Step Guide

Learning cursive handwriting is an exercise in muscle memory, rhythm, and continuous stroke movement. By mastering pencil grip, paper slant, and the four foundational strokes, anyone can develop neat, fluent cursive writing.

1

Pen Grip and Paper Slant

The Relaxed Tripod Grip

Hold your pen or pencil lightly between the thumb and index finger, resting the barrel on the side of the middle finger about an inch above the point.

Tip: Avoid squeezing the pen too tightly. A relaxed grip prevents hand fatigue and allows your forearm and wrist to guide the writing movement.

Tilting the Paper (Slant)

Cursive letters have a natural forward slant (about 60–70 degrees). Rather than turning your wrist awkwardly, achieve this slant by angling your paper on the desk.

Right-Handers: Tilt paper counter-clockwise (about 30°).
Left-Handers: Tilt paper clockwise (about 30°).

Understanding the 4 Handwriting Guidelines

Standard cursive writing paper features four horizontal levels. Keeping your letter heights consistent across these lines is the secret to neat, legible handwriting.

1. Top Headline Where all uppercase letters and tall lowercase ascenders (b, d, f, h, k, l, t) touch.
2. Dashed Midline (x-height) The ceiling for short lowercase letters (a, c, e, i, m, n, o, r, s, u, v, w, x).
3. Solid Baseline The foundation line where all letters sit and rest.
4. Descender Line The floor where lower loops plunge (f, g, j, p, q, y, z).
3

The 4 Foundational Connecting Strokes

Every cursive letter is composed of simple stroke combinations:

1. The Undercurve (Upward Sweep)

Curves up from baseline to midline (used to start a, c, d, e, i, l, t, u).

2. The Overcurve (Arch)

Curves up and arches over to midline (used to start m, n, v, x, y, z).

3. The Slant Downstroke

Pulls straight down along the 60-degree slant line to the baseline.

4. The High Midline Bridge

Horizontal connector resting at midline (used on b, o, v, w).
